Myers Family Orchard is located far away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and noise in the country setting of Copetown, ON. Nestled in the picturesque hamlet, our location will give you a reason to go for a walk, not only to enjoy the fresh air and exercise but to enjoy the scenic fall colors. Our orchard and pumpkin farm makes for the perfect get-away, located only 20 minutes west of Hamilton just mintues north of Hwy 403. Please come and visit us and take in the sites and sounds of the countryside and take home that fresh country taste found in each one of our orchard products.

At Myers Apple Farm, we are passionate about apples and are happy to share our knowledge with you. PICK YOUR OWN APPLES ARE NOW AVIALABLE

At Myers Apple Farm we provide two sizes of pick your own apple bags...no need to bring your own!

We have quarter bushel (10 lbs) bags for $9.50 and half bushel bags (20 lbs)for $17.95. There are pull behind wagons avaialable to take out to the orchard to assist with carrying all of your apples!

HANDLE APPLES CAREFULLY TO PREVENT BRUISING

STORE APPLES IN EITHER AN UNCOVERED OR PERFORATED PLASTIC BAG IN YOUR REFRIDGERATOR

IF STRORING A LARGE QUANTITY OF APPLES, KEEP YOUR APPLES IN A COOL, DARK, WELL VENTILATED SPOT (warm temperatures cause apples to loose their flavour and crispness rapidly - KEEP THEM COLD!)

APPLE TIPS Apple Picking TipsThe best tasting apples should be firm and free of bruising.Ask the farmer at the u-pick apple farms that you frequent for apple picking tips on the specific varieties they grow.The apples on the outer edges of the tree ripen first. If it's early in the season, pick your own apples from the outlying branches first. As the season progresses you should pick from the inner branches.Don't yank the apples from the tree. Lift the apple upwards and give a sharp twist. This will keep other apples from falling from the tree.Place the apples carefully into your basket to prevent bruising.If you're taking children on your outing, choose u-pick apple farms that have dwarf trees for easy pickings.Apple StorageRefrain from washing the apples until you are ready to use them. The moisture accelerates spoiling.When you pick your own apples in bulk, you'll want to store them in a cool basement or fruit cellar. A cool, humid atmosphere is best; however, the apples should be free of moisture.Be sure that the apples don't freeze as it destroys the collagen and you'll be left with a mushy mess.Don't store apples next to potatoes. As potatoes age they release a compound that accelerates apple spoilage.

Do I need to store my apples in the fridge?To ensure your apples will stay fresh a long time, it is important to store them in the refrigerator. Apples soften ten times faster at room temperature. So keep your apples cool! For the best storage possible, keep your apples in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator and they will stay crunchy longer.How can I stop my apples from turning brown?Apples will turn brown, or oxidize, after the fruit is peeled. To slow down the process and prevent browning, try coating cut surfaces with lemon juice. Cortland and Russet are two varieties that especially resist browning and are great choices for salads.What causes apples to go soft?Improper handling and improper storage will cause apples to go soft. Keep your apples cool. Apples soften ten times faster at room temperature than when they are stored in the refrigerator. Handle your apples with care. Bruised apples soften more quickly.What apples are best for baking?While most apples are great to eat fresh, Cortland, McIntosh, Royal Gala, and Empire are several varieties that are exceptional for baking. Seasonal visits of the orchards are fun for the entire family. The fall harvest is an exciting time to take a stroll through the orchard and discover the different varieties of apples we grow. Our U-Pick is open from mid September to late October, exact dates are dependant upon the weather. Our hours are 9am-6pm seven days a week. PANCAKES

Favourite Apple Pancakes

1 egg1/2 cup buttermilk*1/2 cup applesauce2 tbsp salad oil1 cup flour1 tbsp granulated white sugar1 tbsp baking powder1/2 tsp baking soda1/2 tsp saltBeat egg, add remaining ingredients in order listed and beat with rotary beater until smooth. Grease heated griddle if necessary. To test griddle, sprinkle with a few drops of water. If bubbles skitter around, heat is just right.Pour batter from tip of large spoon or from pitcher onto hot griddle. Turn pancakes as soon as they are puffed and full of bubbles but before bubbles break Cook other side until golden brown.*If you don’t have buttermilk, measure 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar into a 1 cup measure, fill with milk and let stand 5 minutes.

SALAD

APPLE & CELERY SALAD

Dressing:8 tbsp cooking oil4 tbsp wine vinegar1 tsp (level) Dijon mustard1 tbsp chopped onion1 tbsp chopped parsleyBlack pepper to tasteSalad:2 heads celery3 oz walnuts, chopped5 red eating apples, cored, cubed but not peeledMake the dressing by pacing all ingredients into a screw-topped jar and shaking well. Chill for 30 minutes.Trim the ends off the celery. Wash and cut into thin julienne strips about 2 inches long.Cut the walnuts in small pieces and place in a bowl with the celery.Toss in the cubed apples.Pour enough of the chilled dressing over to moisten all ingredients and then toss lightly.Apple DumplingsA baked apple, wrapped in tender, golden pastry.Pastry for 9 inch two crust pie6 baking apples, peeled and cored (each apples about 3 inches wide)3 tbsp raisins3 tbsp chopped nuts2 cups brown sugar, packed1 cup waterHeat oven to 425°F. Prepare pastry, roll 2/3 of dough into 14 square, cut into 4 squares. Roll remaining dough into rectangle 14 x 7, cut into 2 squares. Place 1 apple on each square.Mix raisins and nuts and fill centre of each apple. Moisten corners of squares, bring 2 opposite corners of pastry up over apple and press together. Fold in sides of remaining corners (as if wrapping a package); bring corners up over apple and press together. Place dumplings in ungreased baking dish, 11 1/2 x 7 1/2" x 1 1/2".Heat brown sugar and water to boiling. Carefully pour around dumplings, spooning syrup over dumplings 2 or 3 times during baking. Bake about 40 minutes or until crust is golden and apples are tender. Serve warm or cool. If desired, top with whipped cream. Makes 6 servings.

APPLE CRISP

4 cups sliced, peeled tart apples (about 4 medium)2/3 to 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed1/2 cup flour1/2 cup rolled oats (quick cooking)3/4 tsp cinnamon1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease square pan 8” x 8” x 2”. Place apple slices in pan. Mix remaining ingredients thoroughly. Sprinkle over apples. Bake 30 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown. Serve warm, alone or with light cream or ice cream. Makes 6 servings. Great apple choices include McIntosh, Cortland or Idared!

PIE

APPLE PIE

Pastry for 9” two-crust pie3/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)1/4 cup flour1/2 tsp nutmeg1/2 tsp cinnamonDash salt6 cups thinly slice peeled tart apples2 tbsp butter or margarinePreheat oven to 425°F. Prepare pastry. Stir together sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt; mix with apples. Turn into pastry-lined pie pan; dot with butter. Cover with top crust, which has slits cut in it; seal and flute. Cover edge with 2-3” strip of aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning; remove foil last 15 minutes of baking.Bake 40-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

CAKE 1

APPLE CHOCOLATE CAKE

Prepared in food processor1 cup butter or margarine1 1/4 cups white sugar3 eggs1/3 cup cocoa1/4 tsp baking soda1/3 cup water2 cups all-purpose flour2 tbsp baking powder2 apples, peeled, quarteredPreheat oven to 375°F. Grease 9” x 13” x 2” pan.Combine butter, sugar, eggs, cocoa, water and apple in food processor. Mix well. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder and blend until mixture is smooth.Pour into greased pan. Bake 1 hour. Allow to cool 5 minutes before turning on to wire rack to cool OR cool and serve in pan. Spread with chocolate icing.Chocolate icing1 cup icing sugar1 tbsp cocoa1 tsp soft butter or margarine1 tbsp milk (approx)Combine icing sugar and cocoa, sir in butter and enough milk to make a stiff paste.Spread over chocolate cake.Great apple choices include Granny Smith and McIntosh.

CAKE 2

APPLE UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE

1 cup flour1/4 cup margarine1/2 cup white sugar1 beaten egg1/2 cup milk2 tsp baking powder1/2 tsp vanilla1/4 tsp saltSauce:1 cup brown sugar1 tbsp butter1 tbsp flour1/2 tsp vanilla1 1/2 cup waterPreheat oven to 350°F.Cream margarine and sugar. Stir in beaten egg.Combine flour and baking powder. Alternately stir flour mixture, milk and vanilla into margarine mixture.Chop 4 apples. Spread apples into 9” square cake pan. Pour batter over apples. Boil sauce for 10 minutes and pour sauce over batter.Bake 30 minutes at 350°F. Serve with whipped cream.
